Cross Pollination: an NCECA pre-conference for artists and educators about socially engaged craft, pedagogy, and artistic action.
About this Event
The Socially Engaged Craft Collective, in partnership with the School of Design and the Arts at Minneapolis College, is excited to announce a day of workshops, panels, and participation with Cross Pollination: an NCECA pre-conference for artists and educators about socially engaged craft, pedagogy, and artistic action.
Cross pollination suggests exchange and interchange, collaborative action and genetic recombination. Craft and education, art and society are each varietals of humanity’s richest plants. We aim to speak to interdisciplinarity, remixing, intersectionality, and novel combinations while considering traditional and emergent theories of making and teaching.
A one-day participatory conference experience, Cross Pollination will incorporate expert voices from both craft and social engagement perspectives. Participants will find resources and emerging ideas for their art practices and classrooms through panel discussions, lectures and interactive learning experiences. Breakout sessions will focus on the following: Communities (Engaging in Cross-Sector Collaboration); Pedagogy (Engagement and Collaboration in Learning); Idea Generation (Socially Engaged Craft in Practice); and Logistics (the “How To” of Socially Engaged Craft including Ethics and Sustainability).
Date: Conference Tuesday, March 26, 2019; 8:30 am – 5:30 pm

Present Tense Craft Conference
October 10 – 12, 2019
Loews Hotel, Philadelphia
As craft organizations are evolving, artists are innovating, and the definition of craft is expanding, the need for conversation about craft’s meaning, impact, sustainability, and relevance is more important than ever. That’s what we’ll explore at “Present Tense: 2019,” three-day gathering about craft’s evolving roles and relevance in today’s world.
We’ll hear from an exciting lineup of speakers from diverse professions who will tackle timely questions and ideas. How do other fields borrow and incorporate the tenets of craft, and what can we learn from them in return? How does craft inspire and create communities? How do handcrafted objects and acts of making shape our identity, connect us, and influence how we see the world?
We’ll experience Philadelphia, an educational and creative hub for craft and a case study for the way in which creative practices influence a whole community. You’ll encounter that first-hand on tours of local artist studios, museum collections, and more.
And we’ll come away with a shared experience, new connections, big ideas, and a path forward. Sounds like a conference you don’t want to miss, right?
Early-bird registration opens on January 22, 2019. Stay tuned for more details!
Rates: Members $335 / non-members $350 / students $200

call for artists: 4th annual Artaxis Fellowship for workshop at Haystack
We are happy to announce the Call for Applicants for the 4th annual Artaxis Fellowship. This year, we will again be offering two fellowships, each one worth up to $2,000, to fund a two-week summer workshop in ceramics at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. The fellowships will cover room, board, and tuition for a two-week workshop, and up to $500 for travel to and from Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine, USA.
The Fellowship is intended to increase diversity, equity, and access across the field of the ceramic arts. In particular, attention will be paid to race, gender, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status, but unique circumstances such as wartime military service, medical conditions, and unconventional family structures will also be considered. Therefore, Artaxis encourages artists of diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply.
The 2019 Fellowship Selection Committee is comprised of: Morel Doucet, Janina Myronova, and Natalia Arbelaez. After an initial round of reviews by the Artaxis Board of Directors, our distinguished Fellowship Selection Committee will choose the final recipients for the 2019 Fellowship.
Eligibility:
- Nominated by an existing Artaxis member. Members can nominate more than one applicant. (Artaxis members cannot apply)
- Artists 18 years of age or older, at any stage of their career. Nominee does not need to be a student.
- Artists must be able to demonstrate financial need and, if requested by the board, provide a copy of the first page of your most current tax return or other financial document.
- The Fellowship is designed to offer an experience that would otherwise not be possible for the Nominee. To that end, any Nominee who has attended numerous workshops will not be considered “in need”.
- This Fellowship is open to National and International applicants. Artaxis will provide International applicants with letters of invitation, but cannot offer additional funding or support with acquiring a visa.
The 2019 Artaxis Fellowship is supported by Artaxis members and funded by Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in an effort to nurture talent within creatively driven individuals by offering financial support to underrepresented artists.
