This
exhibition brings together objects that navigate complicated
expressions of sexuality, gender identity, and queerness in contemporary
ceramics. Six artists, at various stages in their careers, skillfully
give voice to themes of sexual politics, from quiet suggestions to overt
articulations, through a full variety of ceramic expressions—functional
vessels, wall tiles, and sculptural forms. In the past four decades,
our society has seen dramatic shifts in the visibility and social
acceptance of sexual and gender identities and expressions once
dismissed simply as deviant. Through humor, irony, and tension, Sexual Politics aims to acknowledge these changes, pause in the moment, and problematize the future. Curated by Kelly Connole, Sexual Politics features the work of Jeremy Brooks (Carbondale, IL), Mark Burns (Las Vegas, NV), Ron Geibel (Port Chester, NY), Kathy King (Boston, MA), Christina West (Marietta, GA), and Dustin Yager (Minneapolis, MN).

We are excited to also welcome Mark Burns for the opening reception
on March 13. Burns will give an artist talk on Thursday, March 12, at 6
pm in NCC’s library. This event is also and open to the public.
Finally, Kathy King will present a free workshop during the closing
weekend of the show. King’s graphic pots and sculpture will be the
subject of her artist talk and hands-on workshop. Join us to tell your
own stories in clay! Saturday, April 25, 12 – 5 pm. Reservations are not
required, but space is limited. All materials will be provided.
Ron Geibel joined us as a resident artist from January 2 – 18, in preparation for the exhibition.
Imagine designing a 3D object on your computer, printing it in 3D and
translating that into a ceramic object. and imagine doing it in an
inspiring century-old factory while surrounded by creative minds from
around the world.
With Medalta’s Bits to Atoms workshop (in
partnership with Medicine Hat College), you can do all of this. Bits to
Atoms facilitators will take you through the process of digital design
and 3D printing, in plastic. From there, you will make a plaster mould
from your plastic object, which will serve as the model for your ceramic
piece.
This exciting opportunity is perfect for anyone working
in the field of Education, Digital Design & Rending or Ceramic Art
who is always looking for ways to incorporate new technologies into
their practice.
This workshop will present handbuilt and
thrown functional ware with both commercial and hand made sprig mold
embellishments. Attendees will have a hands-on demonstration of casting a
one part mold for sprig use. Sprigs will then be explored in a variety
of embellishing techniques on and off wheel in making and assembling
highly decorative functional ware.
Join Jason Walker for weekend and hone your sculpting
skills. This workshop will include a 45 minute slide presentation of
Jason’s sculptural work. The first day will demonstrate various
sculpting techniques. On Sunday, you will see more sculpting
techniques, talk about designing a surface and see demonstrations on
surface treatments with underglazes and china paints. This is a lecture
and demonstration workshop, not hands-on. All levels welcome!

are invited to apply for The Bascom’s Residency and Internship Programs,
with opportunities in a variety of departments and mediums, including
ceramics, non-ceramics, youth education, marketing, web-marketing in the
gallery shop and exhibitions. During your stay on the scenic Bascom
Campus, you will immerse yourself in a dynamic professional visual arts
environment, meet artists, facilitate daily open studio hours for the
public, and above all, press forward your studio practice.
