Crystal Morey: Anthropomorphic Sculpture May 14th & 15th at Mountain Maid Workshop

Workshop Description:

10:00 am-5 pm (both days)

From ancient cave paintings to contemporary artwork, humans have used
animal imagery to show emotion, express culture and understand the
natural world around us.

In this workshop we will build clay figures with animalistic
qualities that tell our own personal stories. Workshop demonstrations
will include: the anatomical and fluid body, incorporating realistic
animal elements, gestural hands, and the human head. All of these
components will reveal themselves as useful tools to create an
anthropomorphic sculpture, while also telling your own personal
narrative.

This workshop is open to all skill levels, bring an open mind
and an eagerness to learn and explore.

About Crystal: As a visual artist, Crystal Morey takes inspirations
from an alternative upbringing where she closely connected with the
natural landscape around her. Living in rural Northern California shaped
her perspective on nature and how humans interact with land, animals
and each other. Now living in an urban environment, Morey aims to show
our relationship to the world around us through the fragile medium of
porcelain. With this delicate material she creates a heightened sense of
urgency and stress, commenting on our human evolutionary path.

Morey received her BFA in Ceramic Sculpture from the California
College of the Arts and her MFA in Spatial Art from San Jose State
University. Her work has been included in many publications and online
periodicals such as 500 Figures in Clay, Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose,
Beautiful Surface, and Beautiful Decay. Morey has been an artists in
residence at both Watershed Center for the Ceramic Art and Penland
School of Craft. Morey currently lives in Oakland, California where she
maintains an active studio practice exhibiting her work in galleries and
museums regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Online Courses with Matt Katz (a better way to spend your summer!)

The course is
a 5 week, intensive, online class, and it basically the same course that Matt Katz
teaches to Graduate and Undergraduate students at Alfred.
It is
available to everyone, and is offered for transferable credits for
undergraduate students.
The course
will be offered and twice this summer May-16th-June 24th and June 27th-August
5th.
The class is
presented as a series of videos, that are posted Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays. You can watch them at your leisure. The only restriction is that once
a week we have a live discussion on the three previous video, so If you are
behind, you may miss out on part of the discussion.  After the class is done, you should have
access to the videos for another 4-6 weeks to go back and re-explore.
Additionally, we will have readings and optional labs.

This is the sister course to Glazes, where
in, we dive into what makes clays work and not work. Studying how to make the
most of your studio, clays and firings.

(aka Glazes II)
This is our advanced glaze course, where we
dive deep into the science of what makes glazes cool. Exploring the subtleties,
tips and tricks of glaze chemistry.
This class is also going to be offered once this summer, from June 27th-August
5th.
The
cost of each full course is $1320 which is structured to offer 4 academic
credits.

Instructor: Matt Katz is the creator and
instructor for Introduction to Glaze Formulation Online. Matt has taught
ceramic material courses at The School of Art and Design at Alfred
University for over 12 years. He received a BFA from The School of Art
and Design and a MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Matt’s
extensive study at the Inamori School of Engineering and engagement as a
studio artist have enabled him to design a new version of glaze
formulation that combines the intuition of the artist with the science
of the ceramic engineer. Katz strives to make a complex subject
understandable for individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels.

Robin Hopper’s Swan Song

In the face of a diagnosis of terminal liver cancer, Robin Hopper
took on what he considers one of the most important projects of his
life. “Swansong” is two + hours of
memoir, musings, demos, a tour of his garden and much, much more. As his
final contribution to the ceramics community, Robin wants the impact of
Swansong to benefit children.
