“In Between, the Art Gallery’s exhibition, pairs Kelly Connole with Beth Lo – Connole’s college ceramics teacher. Beth Lo explores her Chinese American heritage through installations of ceramic figures and recently, children’s books. Lo creates clay “kids” who embody both American and Asian stereotypes, and also reference the rich history of Asian ceramics. Lo, who is Professor of Art at the University of Montana, lists myriad sources of inspiration. “I enjoy investigating, celebrating and sometimes satirizing traditional Asian aesthetics, including calligraphy, origami, scrolls, Socialist Realist artwork, Chinese souvenirs and toys, the game of mahjong, as well as Ming and Tang dynasty ceramics.”

ACAD Ceramics will host the annual 1000 Miles Apart conference this fall. The event will take place over three days, October 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The itinerary will present a series of exhibitions, artists’ demonstrations, presentations and social events to facilitate exchange and
dialogue.
This conference was organized about 20 years ago by faculty and students from the University of Manitoba and Red Deer College, Alberta. (The distance traveled inspired the name). Participating institutions later included the University of Regina and Alberta College of Art + Design. Each year the conference is organized collectively and rotates to the host institution for that year. It provides an excellent opportunity for students and faculty to meet and network. The conference maintains a valuable forum to develop and strengthen the community in the west. Along with University of Regina, Red Deer College, and University of Manitoba, students and faculty from nearby Ceramics Programs will also attend if possible, including Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, Kootenay School of the Arts and the University of North Dakota.
This year Guest Artists will include Sam Chung, Andy Brayman, Emily Schroeder (ACAD’s incoming Visiting Artist/Instructor) and a keynote address by Robin Lambert. The annual highlight of the Students/Faculty exhibition of all participating institutions will be held in ACAD’s Gallery 371. A show and silent auction will be held in the Marion Nicholl Gallery on campus.

Ryota Aoki’s New Ceramics Laboratory Vol. 2September 10, 2009 (Thursday) to October 10 (Saturday)”Bijoux is a work first created by Aoki when he spent a half a year studying at the L’Ecole des arts décoratifs in Geneva. Bijoux, in French a “jewel,” is a white porcelain work produced from a mold shaped like 2 joined bowls. Its surface has the velvety soft texture of a baby skin. Each piece is finished by boldly cutting away a part of the original to create a unique work. Aoki infuses the clay with a special glaze he has developed after long study, then in the kiln the glaze is slowly forced out of the clay to coat the snow white porcelain. Bijoux’s secret is its ability to combine an icing flower-like fragility and jewel-like solidity. For his second act, Aoki has used the interplay between large and small Bijoux to turn the Gallery into an ethereal space that feels as though one had wandered into a new dimension.”Ippodo Gallery
