Reason number three million and twelve why Mariko Paterson McCrae rocks:

Charity Cups

Give a little, give alot…
Even though we are run off our feet, we at Feedlot Studios
like to give when and where we can. Often times this comes in the form
of donated art and design services for those who need a little
rah-rah-sis-boom bah. Starting today Mariko will be hanging some upcycled cups, mugs and other ceramic oddity from GIRO
(The Gabriola Island Recycling Organization). They’ll be priced at $5
and only one of those clams will be kept to cover some of the material
and firing cost.
What
a steal you say? Almost…just place the loot (like the plate says) in
the box provided and we’ll get the money into some local non-profit
pockets. See them gems online here.

Curator Talk: elegant disorder

elegant disorder

perspectives on porcelain

Elegant Disorder: Perspectives on Porcelain is a
group exhibition featuring contemporary artists Paul Mathieu, Sin-Ying
Ho, Shelley Miller, Elizabeth Zvonar and Brendan Tang. Presented at
Satellite Gallery, this exhibition engages with the history of
porcelain—in particular, contemporary expressions of the blue-and-white
motifs reminiscent of Chinese Ming Dynasty wares. With more than a dozen
works on display touching on pottery, sculpture and photography, this
exhibition joins new perspectives to familiar porcelain motifs.

The works in this exhibition make a compelling statement: porcelain
is an active and vivid vehicle for our imagination. It has always been a
force in global trade and industrialization since early modern times
and, while its proliferation is a direct consequence of Western
colonialism, it is seldom considered within critical discussions of that
history. This ancient material may seem obsolete within today’s
technocratic societies, yet it continues to thrive, as it has for
thousands of years, in both applied and creative fields.

Elegant Disorder seeks to make visible the tensions between
local and global identities embedded within porcelain’s materiality and
design. It is from this perspective that each artist in the exhibition
subverts expectations of craft and decorative arts as well as gender
roles. Each engages with the questions of history, technology,
sexuality, colonialism, and labour that have long intersected on
porcelain’s elegant surface.

Elegant Disorder: Perspectives on Porcelain is curated by
Louis-Alexandre Douesnard-Malo, a candidate in the Master of Arts
program in Critical and Curatorial Studies at the University of British
Columbia. For more information please visit: http://www.curatorialstudies.ca

This exhibition is made possible with support from the Michael
O’Brian Family Foundation, the Killy Foundation and the Audain Endowment
for Curatorial Studies through the Department of Art History, Visual
Art and Theory, in collaboration with the Morris and Helen Belkin Art
Gallery at the University of British Columbia.

“The Cousins are Coming”
Hello, Happy and Warm Summer Days Ahead…
This
coming weekend on May 26 and 27, Ron Meyers, Judith Duff, and Micheal
Kline will join us with their fabulous pottery here at Bulldog Pottery
for the 4th annual “Cousins in Clay”
May 26 – Saturday 10:00-5:00

May 27 – Sunday 10:00-4:00
For
this year we have made a slight change on where we will display all of
the pottery. We are planning to have the Cousins in Clay event at our
house instead of tents outside of our shop. There seems to be a chance
of showers on the days we would be setting up the tents, and we thought
it best to focus on getting one location ready for the event. For those
of you who are coming to “Cousins,” if you don’t need to park close
please park up at the garden and walk down via the gravel driveway.
That way it will leave the parking spaces closer to the house for those
that are less nimble. To get to our house by car just follow the gravel
driveway pass the yellow cottage and shop and around the garden to the
white house at the end of the gravel driveway …. we will be set-up in
the breeze way. — Look for the flags.
On
Saturday starting shortly before noon Bruce’s brother in-law, Chronis
Pou Vasilou, from Greensboro will be playing his Bouzouki for an
afternoon of Greek music.
And
there will be a light buffet throughout Saturday for as long as the food lasts.
Michael Kline will present a brush work demonstration on Saturday at 2:00 and Sunday at 1:30.
On
Sunday there will be a potters potluck at noon. All are welcome.
Please join us to celebrate and meet our special guest “cousins”
potters, Ron and Judith.
Come on out, it will be comfortable Rain or Shine.
All Our Best,

Bruce, Samantha, Ed, and Gloria (and Maxwell though he may not be available for most of the day, but not by his choice)
P.S. As always check out our pottery blog to see what we are up to at “Around and About with Bulldog Pottery”. And for more details about the this special event visit the “Cousins in Clay” website

Yeon Joo Lee @ Red Star Studio

June 1st – July 28th, 2012

Opening Reception – First Friday, June 1st, 2012, 6-9pm

Subtle body language and unconscious gestures form the basis of Lee’s
work. Inspired by childhood experiences in South Korea, the ideas for
her sculptures come from observations of gymnastics and schoolyard
games. The physical tension of her figures references the psychological
tension of human relationships, and her humor broaches serious emotional
content.

Yeon Joo Lee was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea
where she earned her BFA in painting from Sung Shin Women’s University.
She came to the U.S. to seek a new life in a different environment. The
freedom of her new life is a creative force for her ceramic work. For
the past 4 years, she has lived in Oakland, California while earning her
second BFA degree from California College of the Arts in Ceramics.
Currently Lee is an intern with Arthur Gonzalez, Nathan Lynch and John
Toki. She will be exhibiting her new work in a solo show at Red Star
Studios, on June 1, 2012. Also she will be exhibiting work in Korean
international Art Fair (KIAF) on September 22, 2012.
