Tell a story in clay
Each of these talented artists tells us a personal story in clay. Each
presenter treats the surface in a unique manner, and will share their
surface techniques with YOU over the two-day conference. Explore the
possibilities with surfaces by combining new techniques to what you
already know. Come and find out how to tell your narrative in clay.
This conference is open to artists at all levels: from enthusiastic
amateur, to the teacher, and for the professional. No matter what level
you are, if you’re open to learning and connecting with other ceramic
artists then this is the conference for YOU!
Attendees will learn how to…
• Decorate utilizing the Majolica process
• Visually organize the surface for the viewer
• Use line, color, proportion and other design devices to give personality and resonance to a piece
• Use handbuilding method combining metal and low fire sculpture clay together.
• Incorporate other materials into sculpture such as dipping wire in casting slip, fabrics, stuffed animals, etc.
• Utilize nontraditional surface techniques on wet clay, bisque and post fired work.
• Use low fire oxides, glaze, and encaustic wax for finishing.
• Make multiple forms on the wheel and altering them as well.
• Do surface techniques using commercial underglazes, sgrafitto techniques, and multiple glazing methods.
• Carve, sprig, use sgraffitio, and mishima surface techniques.
• Use wax resist techniques on a green-ware multi-sided, slab constructed, and vessel-like porcelain object.
• Use china painting

Image and Form
A
contemporary bombardment of imagery brought on by relentless
advertising and unyielding production of photographs have left many of
us forgetting that often these images are more than a visual
representation; instead possess shape, take form, and live in our third
dimension. There’s a depth to be considered.
Nine potters now give us the chance to investigate what it means to consider image and
form. Primarily through decal transfers these artists represent not
only the visual but rather the visual in conjunction with the tangible.
How do they come together? Where do they meet? And what’s it mean to
bring an over saturated world of images into the intimate processes of
handmade ceramic? All questions to be considered when viewing Image and Form, from July 6th-20th.

Gilliatt, Julie Guyot, Erik Haagensen, Forrest Lesch-Middelton, Justin
Rothshank, Jane Shellenbarger, and Rimas VisGirda.

“…inventiveness
can come out of necessity to solve or fix a problem. It’s the small
details of ingenuity, the creativeness and resourcefulness used, that I
try to capture in my work.” Working with porcelain, Spain offers us some
truly original and exceptionally outstanding ceramics this month. Upon
first examination, these pots don’t look or feel like pottery at all,
but rather an old oil container or beer can dug up from any Midwest
farming homestead. This is truly amazing stuff, and while Spain
is only fresh out of an undergraduate degree, this young man is showing
skill and potential well beyond his years.

Making your mark, refining your skills!

This workshop is designed for the intermediate studio potter or an
active pottery guild member with access to a full working pottery studio. Our
aim is to open your eyes to healthy creative and various ways to enjoy working
with clay effortlessly!
The workshop will provide techniques for:
*Planning your vessel
*Preparing your clay for decoration during the birth of a successful
bowl
*Slapped bowls and handles
*Slips,
stamps, scrafito and waxing/wax resists during various stages in the making
process.
*Troubleshoot your clay and glaze problems
*Good habits to use in your studio practice and more.
Your needs and feedback will determine the best possible day of learning
for all!
