Penland’s Winter Residency program is a short-term residency opportunity for artists seeking to work independently in one of our 16 studios during Penland’s quiet season. Emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply for our 2-week and 4-week sessions. Shared studio access is provided to a small number of artists each session, inviting enough people to encourage conversation and creative camaraderie, but not so many that focused time in the studio is compromised. Our goal is to support artistic growth, experimentation, and inquiry in all media by offering artists the time, space, and equipment they need to promote professional development.
Penland Winter Residencies are for:
- Artists needing access to facilities for research and development that can be uniquely supported by Penland’s studios and equipment.
- Art educators who are seeking focused work time during a winter break or sabbatical.
- Two or more artists wanting to work collaboratively on a specific project or simply alongside one another in order to share technical expertise and/or creative inspiration. (Each member of the collaboration must apply individually.)

Summer Applications are open until April 30th
The Nanaimo Ceramic Arts Studio and Gallery is located in the heart of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. We offer a variety of classes, workshops and membership programs, plus we host an Artist-in-Residence three times a year. The dates of the Residency terms are: June 1st to August 30th, September 1st to December 23rd and January 10th to May 30th 2020.
During their Residency, Artists will have the opportunity to complete a body of work, show and sell in our gallery and receive guidance in developing a business plan. The unique set-up of Nanaimo Ceramic Arts allows emerging artists to participate and learn within the structure of a small business. Artists are provided with 180 square feet of private space and 24-hour access to electric kilns and pottery equipment. If they wish, artists may apply to host workshops which can bring in a small income. For artists interested in wood fire NCA has strong links to the Tozan Cultural Society, a train kiln and large Noboragama kiln in Cedar (please note that the wood kilns are only fired in the wet seasons and require full participation in prep and firing.)
Nanaimo Ceramic Arts offers two different residency formats.
Product Creation
To be considered for this residency, applicants are expected to have a firm understanding of their material and be ready to begin producing work for sale with the objective of continued production. During their residency, artists will have an opportunity to:
Assistance with this project will be provided through directed assignments,
and regular meetings with the owner-manager of Nanaimo Ceramic Arts, Bronwyn Arundel.
Business Development (not available for June-August 2019)
To be considered for this residency, applicants are expected to have already developed a consistent product line and have some experience selling their work. The objective will be to develop a practical business plan that can be executed after the residency. During their time, artists will have an opportunity to complete a business plan with the following:
Residencies are based upon a work exchange agreement between the Artist-In-Residence and Nanaimo Ceramic Arts. In exchange for space to work, access to materials and assistance with their project, Artists-in-Residence are required to be present in their space for a regularly-scheduled minimum of 15 hours a week during Gallery open hours. The agreement will require the resident to assist with customer walk-ins, and gallery sales as well as contribute to studio tasks which help maintain the function and cleanliness of the studio. Details of these commitments will be included in your contract. Artists are required to pay for their own materials. Clay can be purchased through Nanaimo Ceramic Arts and includes the unlimited use of studio glazes and firing.
Nanaimo Ceramic Arts maintains a clean and health-and-safety-conscious space. Surfaces are kept free of clay dust and precautions are made to limit dust in the air. We do not use toxic chemicals or materials. This includes gold luster, or other known toxins, in our glazes.
Priority is given to clay artists but the Residency is not limited to ceramics. Note: no toxic or noxious chemicals will be allowed, including oil paints or dust-creating processes.

Overview
Studio Practicum programs provide an opportunity for participants to expand and enhance their technical skills in mediums supported by Banff Centre’s Visual Arts production facilities.
In this program, participants will develop ceramics techniques through practical experience with kiln firing (electric, gas, soda, raku, and wood), and ceramics studio operation.
Participants will receive mentorship and feedback from the Ceramics Facilitator, and assist in the delivery of Visual Arts residency programs and events. Participants will also learn maintenance and safe operation of equipment, and provide assistance to the Ceramics Facilitator in support of artists in residence utilizing the ceramics facilities.
What does the program offer?
Learning opportunities will arise through workshops, demonstrations, and instruction in studio training. Individual learning objectives and goals are determined in consultation with a mentor at the beginning of the program. Ceramics is the principal focus of this program, however supplementary learning opportunities may be offered in other Visual Arts disciplines throughout the program.
Practicum participants will experience hands-on learning in support of artist projects in Visual Arts residency programs. Participants will receive mentorship to strengthen their technical and artistic knowledge, as well as communication, critical thinking, teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills.
The regular course of study for the Ceramics Studio Practicum is 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Participants have the opportunity to spend one weekday focused on independent study, while the other four weekdays are dedicated to supporting the Ceramics Facilitator, artists in residence, and regular departmental projects.
Who should apply?
This program is suited for recent graduates of studio-based programs with an emphasis on ceramics. The program offers experience within a professional organization for those seeking careers as studio technicians or production assistants, or those in pursuit of graduate studies. Applicants must exhibit foundational skills in ceramics through their portfolio submissions.
Artists from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with a special invitation to individuals of Indigenous descent.
