Williamsburg Art & Historical Center, Brooklyn, NY OPEN Call for Artists! “ART & BOOK” An International Juried Competition for Artists. Work accepted in the following subject categories: 1) ARTISTS BOOKS: An “artists book” is a work of art, visual or conceptual in nature that refers to books or the idea of the book. It is not illustrations done for books. They are “objects (or sculpture) which have been inspired by, or heavily influenced by “the fetish-object known as book” (to quote Stan Bevington). They are “artists books” even though they don’t conform in all respects to some ten-point checklist of what makes a traditional book.” Richard Miller To paraphrase an essay by Johnanna Drucker, an artist”s book is a work of art conceived and executed as a book and does not exist in any other form or format. It might use images, texts and any and all means of production ” photography, painting, drawing, collage, metalwork, stitching, beading, both handwork and machine driven. 2) FINE ART: PAINTINGS SCULPTURE ETC. The DHM Digital Gallery invites designers working in fiber, clay, wood, metal or glass and plastic to participate in The Art of Applied Design, an international juried competition. All submitted works must be functional objects commonly used within interior spaces, such as furnishings (hard or soft), utensils, fixtures, or containers. Objects must have been created between 2007 and 2010, and anything that is purely decorative is not eligible. Evaluation will be based upon uniqueness and creativity, craftsmanship, and quality of the submitted digital image. The online exhibit will include e-mail addresses of accepted artists to facilitate independent sales of work.
Fees are $25 for the first 2 objects, $10 for each additional object, no maximum number of entries. There will be Best of Show Recognition Awards in 5 media categories, and the juror will be June Gilliam Worthington.
Not eligible for submission are the fine arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.); objects that are purely decorative; works that are representative of functional objects but are not, themselves, functional; photography; video; architecture or architectural drawings; graphic designs; lighting designs (i.e., the projection of illumination in space); or functional objects not typically used within interior spaces.

The Clunes Ceramics Award is an acquisition prize with the winning entry for 2010 becoming part of Art Gallery of Ballarat’s permanent collection. Architecture in Clay
Show dates: July 24 – August 28, 2010 Throughout our history, ceramic elements have been used as an inspiration or vehicle to generate a critical structural element. Other architectural elements have also played an inspirational role for surface embellishment. Architecture in clay is about interpretation of an architectural element or form Criteria for Architecture in Clay:

About the Juror, Max Rain
Max Rain received his BFA in spatial art from San Jose State University, and is completing his MFA at UCLA. He has been working primarily with ceramics for over a decade, but has a long background in painting and illustration. His work is mainly representational, and takes the form of three-dimensional sculpture, or painted and incised imagery. He focuses on the fauna that have adapted to the urban environment, and the similarities between city-dwelling animals and the humans that share and shape their habitat.
