My work explores
America’s complicated relationship with sex through the fetishization of fast
food. I derive inspiration from the idyllic realm of advertisement, where the
object that is represented is often not the product received and the
presentation overtly sexualized.
Fast food objects are
placeholders for the human form; the layers of a burger and strong curve of a
hot dog become yonic or phallic. I decorate these commonly found food items
with colorful slips and glazes mimicking sloppy condiments and personal
lubricants. The vibrancy of color establishes attraction to the piece. Where
the oozing layers of ejaculate like glaze, repulse.
While some innuendoes in
the work come naturally to the form, others are forced. This dichotomy between
obvious and obscure adds another layer to the ridiculous nature of the work.
Once complete, the work is displayed like an advert where a moment is captured,
frozen, and evokes a sense of fake or fabricated depth.

The
Salt Spring Arts Council (SSAC) and the Artist in Residence steering
committee are pleased to announce the second year of the Artist in
Residence (AiR) Program on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia.
The
Artist in Residence (AiR) Program provides an opportunity for artists to
work in the vibrant arts environment of Salt Spring Island. The program
is open to all professionals working in the arts, in any genre or
medium, at any stage of their careers. AiR encourages applications from
artists of diverse cultural and regional backgrounds. The intent is to
provide the time and space for creativity and productivity and to
introduce visiting artists to Salt Spring Island and its arts
community.
Residencies
will be awarded based on available facilities, potential links to the
Salt Spring community, collaborative opportunities and artistic merit.
Applications for the AiR program can be submitted on or before April 15, 2017 for tenure between October 2017 and April 2018.

The
Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory has hosted the
National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA)
since 1984.
The aim is to recognise the important contribution
made by Indigenous artists from regional and urban areas throughout
Australia, working in both traditional and contemporary media. It is an
important showcase for both established and emerging artists and has
come to be regarded as one of the premier national events in the
Australian Indigenous art calendar.
The 2017 Awards ceremony will be held on Friday 11 August.
CATEGORIES
All awards are non acquisitive.
The Telstra Art Award of $50,000 is awarded to the
work considered by judges to be the most outstanding work across all
categories.
The Telstra Emerging Artist Award of $5,000 is awarded
from any category to an artist working within their first five years of
practice who has not exhibited in a major institution.
Prizes of $5,000 each are awarded in each of the following categories:

The Salt Spring National Art Prize (SSNAP) Announces the 2017 Call For Artist Submissions
Offering $30,000 Worth Of Awards
The Salt Spring National Art Prize is pleased to launch its second biennial juried competition of Canadian 2D and 3D visual art.
The intent of the Salt Spring National Art Prize is to encourage artists whose practice demonstrates originality, quality, integrity and creativity, resulting in significant work with a real visual impact and depth of meaning.
Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada who are eighteen years and older (as of January 1, 2016) are are invited to submit their two-dimensional and three-dimensional work for consideration.
Approximately 50 finalists will be chosen by an independent jury from across Canada. All artists’ submissions will be anonymous to the jury.
SSNAP Awards Totaling $30,000:
THE JOAN McCONNELL AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING WORK; $17,000 ($12,000 and a $5,000 Salt Spring Island artist residency)
THE JUROR’S CHOICE AWARDS; three awards of $2,000 selected by each juror
THE ROSEMARIE BEHNCKE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS; three awards determined by a vote of visitors to the exhibition;
1st prize – $3,000
2nd prize – $2,000
3rd prize – $1,000
THE ASA (Alliance of Salt Spring Artists)
AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SALT SPRING ARTIST; $1,000
