Clay Art Center seeks a Studio Manager to be responsible for managing the facilities and day to day operations of a vibrant non-profit ceramic art organization in Port Chester, New York.

Individual must have worked at least 1-2 years of experience in a similar ceramic studio environment, have excellent people skills, and experience with supervising others. Must be well organized, possess technical knowledge of kilns and glazes and have enough experience to initiate improvements to the studio as needed, with approval from the Executive Director. ~35 hours per week.

FLEXIBLE START DATE IN LATE SUMMER/EARLY FALL 2018

Who Should Apply
I’m seeking an assistant who cares about quality in all aspects and forms. The applicant should be curious, a hard worker, direct communicator, self-motivated, respectful, be able to hustle, and be detail oriented. Applicants with academic degrees outside of the fine arts are encouraged. Someone with experience in 3D modeling and mold-making would be a plus, but not necessary.  The relationship between potter and assistant is an intimate one and needs to be the right fit personality-wise.  A sense of humor and ability to learn from mistakes with humility are a must. I’ve had many different assistants with a variety of skill sets, I can meet people where they’re at. I do require a positive, can-do attitude and love it when assistants are open and honest about their opinions.

Time and Timing
1-3 days of work a week with flexible daytime hours. No studio space or board is provided, and pay depends on experience. I value my quiet work time and find that having space apart makes for a better relationship for both parties. There are studio spaces in town that can be rented. Flexible start date between August 15 and September 15, with a two week trial period to make sure we have a good fit. One-year commitment.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include all aspects of studio maintenance- preparing clay (applicant should be able to occasionally wedge 25 pound of clay), production using a RAM press, glazing, mixing slips and glazes, decaling, loading and unloading kilns, photographing and videographing, data entry, packing and shipping, research and copy writing. If you have 3D modeling and mold making skills, we’d be utilizing these as well. If you don’t know some of these things, it’s alright as long as you’re a fast learner and detail-oriented. Possibly some marketing as well, depending on skill level. Having a car is highly recommended, but not necessary as I’m on a bus route ten minutes from downtown Portland.

What You’ll Learn
You’ll be part of all aspects of the making process from start to finish and learn how a small business operates. I always have multiple side projects that I need help with. I’m very open about all the marketing and the strategy behind it. Depending on your interest, we can go further into social media and online presence.

The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery seeks a dynamic, inspiring Executive Director to lead this contemporary ceramic and glass gallery as it grows and develops new audiences with greater outreach into the community, and onto the national and the international stage. The Executive Director will work to fulfil the Gallery’s artistic vision, tell its story, advocate publicly for the Gallery and lead development efforts to support the expansion of its programs and to ensure the Gallery’s financial stability.

The Executive Director is responsible for leading and mentoring a dedicated team of staff professionals, and for building strong collaborative relationships with other galleries and community partners, locally and in a wider context. GALLERY BACKGROUND

The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery opened in 1993 in a purpose-built, award-winning building designed to showcase contemporary Canadian ceramic and glass art. Now in its 25th year, it has recently undergone a $1.3 million renovation to bring the Gallery to a new standard of excellence. The Gallery is supported by the City of Waterloo, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, along with corporate, foundation and individual funders.

The Opportunity

To complement existing instructional resources, this position will instruct four (4) 4.5 hour-long studio courses at all levels of the undergraduate BFA in Ceramics program. Salary will be commensurate with experience and education. In addition, the successful candidate will be provided with two (2) course releases towards research and studio practice. They will be required to report and present on research activities as well as mount an exhibition of their studio practice and research at the College while in residence at the College.

The successful candidate will be capable of teaching all forms of Ceramic practice through core courses and studio supervision, including vessel, sculptural, figurative, installation and performance.  The candidate will possess an active studio practice that will contribute to the breadth of the program and demonstrate a critical and creative engagement with contemporary discourse on Craft and Ceramics.  In combination with a collaborative spirit and professional commitment to the field, experience in academic service, curricular innovation, and Ceramics studio management will be considered an asset.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching four (4) x 4.5 hour long studio courses at all levels of ACAD’s Ceramics program
  • Maintaining a research/studio practice, and contributing to research and scholarship in the field of contemporary Craft, specifically Ceramics

Development Assistant

Watershed seeks a Development Assistant to support the organization in the areas of donor cultivation and stewardship; annual appeals, and special event coordination.

Summer Staff Positions

Watershed’s year round staff is supplemented during the summer by seasonal employees. These summer staff members are essential to the operation of the residency program and are an integral part of the Watershed team. Positions include work in the studio, kitchen and dining room, administrative office, and housekeeping.

While each staff position has specific responsibilities and duties, a strong emphasis is placed on teamwork. Friendliness, politeness and interpersonal communication skills are vital to working effectively in a dynamic environment that is often intense and demanding. Staff are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times and to contribute to the general upkeep and appearance of the facilities. The focus of all work is to provide an exceptional experience to our resident artists.

Summer staff work a minimum of 35 hours per week. Additional hours are expected during events and some evening and weekend hours will be required. During their time at Watershed, summer staff members are provided with shared housing, all meals, a modest stipend, and dedicated studio space, however, limited time may be available to produce personal artwork.

Watershed is accepting applications for 2018 summer staff positions until February 15, 2018. Interviews will be conducted in March and applicants will be notified of their status in early April.
