Call for entry: A Sense of Place

The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is pleased to announce a Call for Entries for its 2012 juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place. Open to participants from throughout the United States, this 32nd annual event seeks to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work being generated by contemporary American artists. Serving as Juror for the competition is Nancy Solomon, director of Solomon Projects, a critically acclaimed art gallery based in Atlanta, Georgia, dedicated to new and experimental solo presentations by emerging and mid-career artists. The 2012 juried fine art competition is open to all US artists age 18 and older. All works must be original, not previously exhibited at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art and completed on or after June 1, 2010. Work that predates this cut-off date will not be considered. Entries in the following media categories will be accepted: painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, photography, ceramics, and sculpture. Film and video pieces are ineligible. The exhibition is not judged in media categories. Three cash prizes will be given, including a $750 Best of Show Award and two $500 Juror’s Awards. Award recipients will be announced at the exhibition’s opening reception on Friday, September 14, 2012.

Job posting – Clay Studio in Philadelphia

Executive Assistant

The Executive Assistant position is part time, 18 – 24 hours per week (occasional nights and/or weekends), and primarily serves as an intermediary between The Clay Studio’s many departments and our finance consultants (bookkeeper and controller). Additional duties include assisting the President in managing the office, files, financial processes, and occasional meetings / scheduling. Specific Duties

    • Handling, processing, and coding of all TCS bills and invoices
    • Prep and deliver bank deposits
    • Prep weekly financial information for the bookkeeper
    • Review all sales slips/reports for accuracy
    • Oversee online web charges
    • Assist with prep for annual audit
    • Assist with the monthly bank statements
    • Manage office petty cash
    • Restock and order office supplies
    • Offer miscellaneous administrative assistance
    • Maintain office vacation/holiday schedules – this entails requesting documentation from all staff, including senior – must be comfortable with this responsibility
    • Assist with board meeting and various event preparation
    • Manage the process of digitally archiving documents
    • Report to and Assist TCS President with specific office duties

Key Competencies The Executive Assistant must:

    • Be highly organized with a refined attention to detail
    • Have an ability to anticipate office needs and make recommendations about improving office procedures
    • Strong ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage multiple projects.
    • Be trustworthy and able to handle confidential information
    • Possess a basic understanding of accounting and cash handling procedures
    • Hold basic Mac computer skills
    • Be knowledgeable of Excel and other Microsoft Office programs
    • Be patient and able to communicate effectively
    • Be independent and motivated
    • Possess an excellent work ethic, passion for the arts, and a sense of humor

Qualifications

    • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2 years of office administrative experience
    • Salary is $12.00 per hour and will not be eligible for benefits.
    • Must be available to work Mondays and Tuesdays

Call for entries: Tea


The Art League is pleased to host the 2012 Tea—Ceramics Exhibit, May 3 through June 3, 2012.

Tea is a channel of ritual, relic, and spirituality that connects cultures. Artists are asked to celebrate the organic diversity of ceramic form while exploring “tea” as the functional muse. Artwork may be traditional, modern, or conceptual in design. Entry is open to all wares associated with drinking, serving, and presenting tea. All artwork must be original and prepared for display. This exhibit is presented in tandem with the biennial Ikebana Show.

Deadline: Tuesday, April 17, 2012
Exhibit Dates: May 3—June 3, 2012
Artists’ Reception and Awards Ceremony: May 31, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
The reception will also feature a musical performance by the Washington Toho Koto Society.

Juror
Ceramic artist John Neely— John Neely is an accomplished potter who has exhibited and lectured throughout the US, Europe, and the Pacific Rim. His group, solo, and international exhibitions include the Yixing County Museum in Yixing China; International Teapot Invitational Exhibition at the Taipei County Yingko Ceramics Museum in Taiwan; CLAYFEAST Masters Exhibition in Gulgong, Australia and Beuna Gallery in Risor, Norway. His work has also been exhibited in the Ariana Gallery in Royal Oak, MI; Gallery of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in Ashville, NC; University of Iowa Museum of Art in Iowa City, IA and the Ceramics Monthly International Competition in Columbus, OH. His work has appeared in such publications as Ceramics Technical, Ceramics Monthly, NCECA Journal, Purple Sands Magazine, Studio Potter and Ceramics: Art and Perception. Neely has conducted in workshops at the International Woodfire Conference in Flagstaff, AZ; Functional Ceramics Workshop in Wooster, OH; Utilitarian Clay Conference in Arrowmont, TN; Mendocino Arts Center in Mendocino, CA, and the Experimental Porcelain Workshop in Jingdezhen, China. Neely currently works as Professor of Art in Ceramics and Assistant Department Head at Utah State University in Logan, UT.

Open to all artists. Art League gallery members receive a discounted rate for entry.

Entries
Select invitation for exhibit will be extended by Blair Meerfeld, Art League Ceramics Chair.

Open call for entries for jurying is offered by the Art League gallery. All artwork must be original and prepared for display. Work must not exceed 15”x15” in footprint or any direction. Work must not exceed 25 lbs. Works must have been completed within the last two years and should not have been previously shown in The Art League. Make checks payable to The Art League. Submit entry fee and form with your CD of images. Digital Entries Only. Due no later than Tuesday, April 17, 6:00 pm. Artists may submit up to 3 objects for jurying. There is a $25 ($15 for AL members) non-refundable entry fee. Artists will be notified by email on Friday, April 20, 2012.

Jury Process–Digital Images Only
Artists may submit images that are of the intended showpiece(s) or of artwork they have created in the past two years. Submit images in JPEG format. Images should be 300 dpi and no more than 2100 pixels at the longest dimension. (Approx. a 5”x 7” high-resolution photo) All files must be labeled with artist’s first initial and last name followed by entry number. Please include H x W x D, materials used, and firing process. Please include all materials (CD, entry form, entry fee) in an envelope marked with the artist’s first and last names. Note: your CD will not be returned to you.

Prizes
There will be a $1,000 prize awarded to “Best in Show,” and two $400 “Equal Awards.”
