Well there is honestly nothing more pleasing than finding amazing work practically right in your backyard, plus the joy of meting a blog reader in person. Last weekend I meet Brenda Wolf at the Cathedral Village Arts Festival and was completely taken with her work. In fact the piece in the 3rd picture below now sits on my living room cabinet. I also have a soft spot for artists who work both functionally and sculpturally like me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

This event is held every second year at the Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Art Centre, Gymea NSW.
The event has been part of the ceramics calendar for the past 50 years
as it used to be held annually. It has been a spring-board for the
careers of many famous potters and ceramic artists.
In 2012 the event will take place from 22 September with an Official
Opening and will continue until 3 October 2012 when any unsold entries
must be collected.
This year our Judge will be Greg Daly. Here is a quote from the Entry Form:
About the Judge –
Greg
Daly is a ceramic artist resident of the Cowra district and lecturer at
the Australian National University – Ceramic Workshop. A member of
the International Academy of Ceramics – Geneva, he is a ceramicist of
national and international standing with works in national and
over 75 international galleries / museums.
“In
my own work, I have concern for the whole piece – throwing, finishing,
glazing, firing, decorating are all important to me in the creation of
the work. Images, illusions of surface and the form they are placed upon
to create individual works”.

MoCC is looking for an associate curator to help us create and deliver outstanding exhibitions and programs.
1. A cover letter that
describes the unique skills you bring to curatorial practice, your
long-term professional goals, and your availability (2 pages maximum).
2. A resume with three professional references.

4. 2-3 writing samples; these can be any combination of types of

The Associate Curator
position offers an energetic and creative curator the opportunity to
originate and implement exhibitions and programs that help the Museum of
Contemporary Craft in partnership with Pacific Northwest College of Art
rethink craft, design, curation as a practice, and the Museum of the
21st Century.
The individual best-suited
for this position is organized and flexible, relishes a fast-paced and
fluid environment, works well as a collaborator, leader and supporter of
broader institutional initiatives, and is dedicated to the museum as a
unique educational environment that connects PNCA
with the community. A master’s degree in art, art history, design, or
museum studies is preferred; 2-3 years of work in a museum environment
is required. Must have a strong interest in the history of craft and/or
design.
MoCC is a small, nimble
museum in which staff each wear multiple hats. The candidate must have a
strong research background, excellent writing skills, be comfortable
with public speaking, and be able to think outside the box. The
associate curator must also have experience installing and handling
artwork, and provide administrative support by being fully versed in the
Microsoft Office suite (high familiarity with excel is a must).
Publishing and public program development is a plus.
This position involves
individual as well as collaborative work with teams both within the
Museum and College and outside individuals, groups, institutions, and
special interest communities. The associate curator works directly with
the Director and Chief Curator, Curator of Collections and Registrar,
contract preparators, interns, volunteers and other Museum staff. Campus
connections with PNCA include
working with the Communications and Advancement teams to support
promotional and fundraising needs for the Museum; implementation of
curricular initiatives with faculty; and serving as a mentor and role
model for students.
This position will be
directly responsible for curating two exhibitions each year. This
includes original research, exhibition design, program development, and
writing labels, essays and publications as needed – and/or
implementation of exhibitions originating at peer institutions, with
guest curators and/or artists. As part of the curatorial team, you will
also provide support when needed on projects led by other curatorial
team members.
All museum staff will be
expected to work on audience cultivation, support promotional and
fundraising efforts, curricular projects, and maintain a positive work
environment in which hard work is balanced with quality of life. The
ideal candidate is seeking an appointment in which there is opportunity
to grow as a museum professional, develop a range of skills, and shape a
future for a Museum connected to one of the fastest growing independent
art colleges in the nation.

Emerging Artists Encouraged to Apply
Applications Due Monday, June 18, 2012
The Society for Contemporary Craft has launched an exciting new
apprenticeship program for a recent B.A. or M.F.A. graduate who works in a craft medium. The apprentice will work full-time for SCC’s education department and enjoy access to our studio facilities. This opportunity is ideal for emerging artists looking to gain professional experience in an educational setting while building their own body of work over the course of one year. The apprentice will receive a monthly stipend of $1,000 plus a $300 housing allowance each month. Responsibilities include:
- Acquire real-world experience in the day-to-day operations of an educational studio facility.
- Teach introductory studio courses and enhance personal teaching skills.
- Be mentored by, and assist nationally and internationally known visiting artist instructors.
- Learn about marketing, pricing, merchandising and how to sell work through retail galleries.
- Create new work while having free access to SCC’s studios and equipment (the apprentice is expected to make work outside of business hours as well as document progress through postings on SCC’s blog).
- Work 40 hours per week in The Studio, with one half day set aside weekly to work on personal projects during SCC’s open hours.
- Monitor classes, and maintain studio facilities and equipment.
- Work with the public to engage visitors in the creative process through artist demonstrations.
- Exhibit new works in SCC’s Studio Gallery.

The 18th international juried exhibition is dedicated to enhancing the public’s awareness of contemporary
craft while providing a venue for established and emerging artists alike
to share their functional and sculptural creative endeavors.
Juror – Cindi Strauss
Cindi Strauss is Assistant Director, Programming and Curator for
Modern and Contemporary Decorative Arts and Design at the Museum of Fine
Arts, Houston. She holds a BA with honors in Art History from Hamilton
College and an MA in the History of Decorative Arts from the
Cooper-Hewitt/Parsons School of Design. Cindi is a member of the board
of the American Craft Council and the Advisory Council of the Houston
Center for Contemporary Craft and has served as a grant evaluator for
the Pew Charitable Trust and the Center for Craft, Creativity, and
Design.
