Submissions of Interest are being accepted for the installation of three significant large scale works of art for the G.H. Dawe Centre.
Project 1: The west-side wall along the new main entrance of the building is approximately 12m in length. The artwork here could be a mural, mosaic, low relief sculpture, etc. This $107,200.00 public art project will be an artist designed installation or sculpture.
Project 2: This 3.5m in diameter site is located at the west end of the interior mall and is outside the main entrance of the Red Deer public library, Dawe branch. The City of Red Deer has deemed this site suitable for an artist led collaborative freestanding artwork, created with the RDPL patrons and/or students from St. Patrick’s and G.H. Dawe Community schools. This $33,400.00 public art project will be an artist designed installation or sculpture.
Project 3: This site encompasses a long curving exterior wall to the pool and gym areas. Total length of this wall is 43.3m and is broken up with a series of large paneled glass windows. It could be suitable for a glass/window treatment (visibility must be maintained) or a mural, etc. This $33,400.00 public art project will be an artist designed installation or sculpture.
Artwork for all three project sites will be of durable fabrication and resistant to vandalism and other associated concerns inherent to a large public facility and all should reflect the themes of this unique complex: education and learning, recreation, fitness and healthy lifestyles.
Submissions of Interest should include:
– Letter of Interest
– Qualifications and/or Resume
– Photos/slides/DVD of up to 20 images
– Description (if available) of previous projects and/or commissions
– Note: Please do not submit renderings/maquettes for your proposal at this stage
Deadline for Submission of Interest is March 29. The selected artists/art groups will be notified (by letter or phone) with the Terms of References by April 30.

When Pinnell teaches a workshop, the point is not to entertain or impress those attending. Instead, the intent is to provide ideas, techniques, information and insight that will be useful to those attending, and that will empower them when they return to their own studios. Because of this, the attention to questions and concerns of those at the workshop and the focus of Pinnell’s presentation often shift in response the discussion. Pinnell has taught many workshops over the last 25 years, and no two have ever been exactly alike. To begin the workshop, Pinnell will throw, alter, assemble, and texture a small group of utilitarian pots, including a teapot, ewer and cup. He will also demonstrate a variety of techniques for making pottery parts, including handles, spouts, lids and feet. While at work, he will address the aesthetic underpinnings of utilitarian pottery and contemporary ceramics in general, and lead the audience in a discussion of these topics. Pinnell will begin the second day answering questions and lead discussions on clay bodies, and firing. Attendees are encouraged to bring questions and share their expertise for the benefit of others. It is always interesting to see examples of things that did not work, and to have the entire group troubleshoot the problem. We willl use a computer glaze program called Hyperglaze (projected for everyone to see) to analyze the glaze, so we can better understand what is causing the problem, and we will work together to try to generate a solution. The intent of this part of the workshop is both to find solutions and also for everyone to experience the process that we use to find solutions.

Visual artists, performance artists, musicians, composers, critics, curators, arts administrators, designers and writers are invited to apply to the Residency Program. The program has been designed to provide work space, accommodation and meals in a retreat environment where participants can work independently on their own project(s) for a time period of one to five weeks depending on availability (not all consecutive). The program also features an invited artist in residence whenever possible. The artist in residence is invited to work independently and is not required to provide formal instruction to residency participants. The opportunity will be available for creative interaction during social and serendipitous occasions (see Invited Artists In Residence). THEMATIC RESIDENCY: FIGURE IN A MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE (REPRISE)

Program Dates: May 10 to June 18, 2010 London-based painter Silke Otto-Knapp will lead participants into the landscape around Banff National Park. On arrival at various scenic locations the group will ready themselves, like generations of artists before them and begin to make art.
