This year I will:
work harder to make what I do resemble a career
spend less, make more
make without fear
challenge everything i think about my work
push my boundaries
get outside my box
do more glaze tests
buy more handmade
consider more layers. in work and in content
find the elusive colors i seek
make tangible the thoughts in my head
become inspired by more artists
try to make inspiring work
try to find more confidence about my work
apply for more shows
learn to say no to the things that just absorb my time in non productive ways
check my email only once a day rather than countless
give more back
learn new skills
travel more
meet more artists face to face
write again
soda fire again
take more pictures
smile more
appreciate more
and clean my studio
here’s to looking forward to another amazing year at musing about mud

Eligibility is limited to artists, artist teams, and independent curators who reside in King County, WA and are not represented by a commercial gallery at the time of application. Members of artist run collectives and cooperative galleries are eligible. Artists working in all media and genres are encouraged to apply, including those whose medium or method of work is under-represented in commercial galleries. Please contact Esther Luttikhuizen with questions concerning eligibility at 206 296.8674. Selection Process
A Selection Panel composed of regional arts professionals and artists reviews exhibition proposals and awards eleven exhibition opportunities for the upcoming gallery season (September 2011 through August 2012). The composition of the Panel changes yearly. The Panel considers geographic and cultural diversity as well as a wide variety of genres and media; final selection is based on artistic merit and strength of the proposal. An applicant’s images and statement must clearly convey their ability to execute their proposed exhibition. This is an online application only.

March 5-6: Adrian Arleo – Transformations
Having worked with the human form for more than 25 years, I’ve figured out a few problem solving techniques and a lot of dos and don’ts. This two-day workshop will be chockfull of demonstrations for coil building the figure, and various surface finishes, both low-fired and non-fired . Anatomical perfection will not be addressed; rather, the demonstrations will focus on building techniques: how to use a base and rod for building tall standing figures, how to begin a seated figure, how to make a head and facial features, how to keep forms from slumping, caving in or cracking. If you’ve had a recurring technical problem, bring it up and we’ll try to remedy it.
The second half of the workshop will be about developing surface textures
and experimenting with different tools and found objects. I’ll share the low-fire glazes that I use, and discuss application techniques. Layering of Terra sigillata is a surface finish we’ll demonstrate, Non-fired paints can add amazing richness to ceramic forms; wax encaustic and casein (milk paint) are favorites that will be talked about as well.
