Marie Woo’s groundbreaking personal work, including vessels, sculptures, installations, and the creation of her signature and sought after glazes “Woo Blue” and “Woo Yellow,” achieve the often-elusive aspiration that drives many visual artists – honouring tradition while simultaneously pushing a form forward. Her work as a scholar, preservationist, curator, and educator have further influenced, sustained, and connected the field of ceramics.

About the Exhibition

The Clay Studio National is a biannual exhibition that showcases the wide range of ceramic art being made in the United States today.

Exhibition Dates: June 20th – August 2, 2020 – Reception, June 20th

Guest Juror

Lauren Sandler is the Assistant Professor and Program Head of Ceramics at Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA.

Sandler is an artist and educator whose work deconstructs mythologies and investigates narratives of power and perspective. With fragmented forms, allegorical vessels and mundane assemblages, Sandler amplifies interdependence, highlights stories obfuscated or erased and implicates our assumptions of normal and worth. With a background in anthropology, she examines the myriad chronicles told by objects and develops work where the visceral and structural meet a shared intersection of body, culture and history.

Critical Function 2: Shop the Exhibition

Thank you for visiting Critical Function 2, an online gallery hosted by the Visual Arts of Richmond that features one of NCECA’s concurrent exhibitions for the 2020 conference year. Curated by Alex Kraft and Melanie Shaw and juried by Carole Epp, Jill Foote-Hutton, Garth Johnson, Bernadette and Neil Mansfield, Critical Function 2 interprets functional ceramics through the works of almost 40 artists spanning across 3 continents. Although this exhibition was originally a part of NCECA’s Annual Conference for 2020 in Richmond, VisArts and the organizers of Critical Function 2 felt that it was important to feature this diverse exhibition online to support artists and NCECA’s efforts. Works are available for purchase online and will help support both VisArts and the artists directly. Thank you for your support!
