artist Susan Shantz presents a series of sculptures and prints in this
exhibition entitled, creatures in transition. Her work encompasses a
fascinating process of drawing upon on-line photographic sources to
remake a selection of 20th century Japanese ceramic animal effigy
teapots from the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s permanent collection.
Shantz uses three-dimensional computer clay modeling software
technology and a haptic tool to recreate the selected badger, sparrow
and frog pots in two and three-dimensional forms of varying sizes. Such
an exhibition questions “the ubiquitous manufactured versions of nature
in our culture,” while focusing on how virtual treatment of art
generates a loss of cultural information.
Susan
Shantz graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from York University in
1989 and currently teaches sculpture and mixed media in the Department
of Art and Art History, University of Saskatchewan. Her work has been
featured in public and artist-run galleries across Canada including:
Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria,
Definitely Superior, Thunder Bay and Galerie Articule, Montreal. Among
the numerous permanent holdings that feature Shantz’s art are:
Saskatchewan Arts Board, Canada Council Art Bank, MacKenzie Art Gallery
and the Burlington Cultural Centre.

AN EVENING WITH
TRUDY GOLLEY: RECENT TRAVELS IN CHINA
In 2005 Trudy Golley was invited to Shanghai, China to create a two-meter tall bronze statue for placement in a public park there. That experience started an ongoing relationship with porcelain, The Pottery Workshop‘s Experimental Factory in Jingdezhen, and China in general. Now looking forward to her sixth artist residency and coleading a two-week ceramics study tour to China in the spring of 2013, Trudy will present an evening of images and stories about the innovative ceramics research that she has been pursuing there.

FROM START TO FINISH: FORM AND SURFACE
The Red Deer Pottery Club invites you to attend a
one-day workshop with ceramic artist, Trudy Golley
on Saturday, May 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Refreshments from 9:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided.
In this demonstration workshop Trudy will focus on methods for making and using paper clay, as well as strategies that encourage a personalized approach to press-molding and handbuilding. Trudy will also cover decorating and glazing techniques that start at the raw and leatherhard stages and progress right through to the bisque and glaze firing. The aim is to unlock the potential of glazes and glazing methods to achieve rich surfaces that enhance and support the ceramic object’s form.

The Allied Arts: Architecture and Craft in Postwar Canada

Painting, sculpture, architecture, design and craft continue to jockey
for status in the artistic landscape, and one of the most coveted
positions is that of public art. Materials easily classified as craft
when produced on a small scale in a studio setting suddenly appear
sculptural or painterly on a large scale. Since World War Two Canadian
architecture has provided unique occasions to challenge and shape the
field we call contemporary craft. This lecture will explore instances
where Canadian architecture and craft have worked together, and
sometimes at odds with each other, in an effort to demonstrate that even
in the twenty-first century they remain Allied Arts.

DIY Will Never Die!
Lecture and reception. Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, University of Winnipeg, 515 Portage Ave
The DIY Movement has received much attention as a new driving force
behind craft economics. This lecture will contrast historical craft
pioneers with contemporary crafters to argue that in order to understand
future craft economies as they are connected to the power of
do-it-yourself crafting, it is essential to examine past craft
economies. What ideologies keep repeating, and what are the elements
that keep DIY alive and financially vital across generations?
BIO
Dr. Sandra Alfoldy is Professor of Craft History at
NSCAD University, and Associate Curator of Fine Craft at the Art Gallery
of Nova Scotia. She is the author of The Allied Arts: Architecture and Craft in Postwar Canada (2012) and Crafting Identity: The Development of Professional Fine Craft in Canada (2005), editor of Neocraft: Modernity and the Crafts (2007) and co-editor of Craft, Space and Interior Design, 1855-2005(2008).
She was the Chief Curator of the national Canadian exhibition at the
Cheongju International Craft Biennale (2009) and the 2010 Vancouver
Winter Olympics. She is currently at work on a new book on craft and
popular culture.

greetings from Changchun, the sculpture capital of China﹗
In order to vigorously flourish the world ceramics art
and promote the development of urban ceramics construction, Changchun Municipal
People’s Government has successfully held the 1st Changchun International Ceramics
symposium in 2011, and 12 noted ceramists from 10 countries were accepted and
invited to participate in it and created excellent ceramic works for the city
Changchun, a well-known cultural city in northeast China.
From next late July to mid-August, 2012, Changchun Municipal
People’s Government will hold the 2nd China Changchun International Ceramics
Symposium, with the theme of “Eternal and classic—traveling across history and future”, for further promoting
international cultural exchanges, improving the cultural taste of the city as
well as increasing the city’s international influence and popularity. About 20
ceramists will be accepted to participate in this event.
We sincerely invite you to submit proposals to the 2nd
China Changchun International Ceramics Symposium. We’d like you to:
1. Deliver at
least 3 or more ceramic proposals based on the Symposium’s theme, which are
requested to reflect the theme and the distinctive ethical and regional characteristics
of your country or region. Two of the ceramic proposals should be no less than
80cm (in length) ×80cm(in width) ×80cm (in height) in order to achieve the exhibition effect of the ceramics
symposium.
2.
Specify the materials’ dimensions and colors of the proposed works. Please
deliver A4 size colored design drafts or photographs of maquettes of your
proposals and their digital files in JPEG, BMP or TIF format. The digital photo
should be no less than 1 megabytes.
3.
Fill in the attached registration form and enclose your passport photo, your recent
daily photo and your resume. The digital photo is no less than 1 megabytes. Your
ceramics portfolio is also appreciated.

Send proposals by express mail or e-mail before May 30th, 2012 to:

All the proposals will be carefully reviewed by the
Organizing Committee, extensively evaluated by the public and finally appraised
by celebrated masters.
If any of your proposals gets approved by the Organizing
Committee, you will receive an official invitation to Changchun for creating it
on site from late July to the mid-August, 2012. We will provide you with round-trip
economic flight tickets (only from your residential city to Changchun), an
allowance of 8000 yuan (RMB), free accommodation in Changchun, common
processing tools, assistants and interpreters, as well as honor diplomas. Besides,
some seminars on ceramists’ creation concept and some tours around the city
will be arranged. All the completed ceramics works will be permanently owned
and collected by the institution of Changchun Municipal People’s Government.
The organizing committee will provide ceramists with worksite and following equipments
and materials:
A. Three gas shuttle kilns (1m³/ 0.5m³/ 0.15m³), two electrical kilns (0.35m³/ 0.1m³), and one wood-burning kiln.
B. Potter’s wheels, slab roller,
stoving chest, pugmill.
C. Jilin crock clay, Zibo
earthware clay, Zibo porcelain clay.
D. More than thirty types of
slips, twenty types of glaze and ten types of chemical reagent.
The Organizing Committee is responsible for interpretation of the content
above.
