Today’s eye candy is a sad one as I’ve just received word that Janet Mansfield has passed away. A kind and generous spirit that I was blessed enough to meet in my travels. Her impact on our community will be long felt and her stunning artwork will inspire for generations to come.

An Invitational and Juried Exhibition
The Clay Studio Is now accepting applications for Small Favors VIII,
an invitational and juried exhibition of diminutive works, each piece
exhibited less than 4”Length, 4”Width, and 4”Height. Online
applications will be accepted through March 31st, 2013. No paper
applications will be accepted.
View works from past Small Favors Exhibitions.
Small Favors challenges and engages artist’s creativity in new
and exciting ways with the challenge of making pieces for this
exhibition. For some artists, the work they create is similar to what
they normally make although at a reduced scale. Others use it as an
opportunity to break away from what they create in their daily studio
practice. Regardless of this choice, the works exhibited are incredibly
varied in material, form, and aesthetics. Though small in scale the
artworks created for this exhibition are huge in impact. Each work is
exhibited in a Plexiglas wall mounted cube.
Conceived of in 2006, Small Favors grew out The Studio’s
efforts to offer accessible, high-quality artworks that appeal to art
enthusiasts of all ages: for older collectors who are challenged for
space it allows them to continue to collect work by artists they love.
For young art collectors it provides an accessible entry point.
For the first time, The Clay Studio is putting out a call for entries
and accepting applications for this annual exhibition that has, up until
this point, been an invitation only show. It is our sincere hope that
this new process brings to light new makers and broadens the audience
we reach through the display of these unique works of art.

Workshop: 10:00am – 4:00pm
Slide Presentation: 5:00pm – 6:00pm
Internationally recognized for her mastery and reinterpretation of historical ceramic technique, Michelle Erickson
joins us for a day of demonstration and slide presentation of her work.
Her contemporary work makes use of arcane ceramic techniques to create
historical narratives about political, social and environmental issues –
both past and present. Regardless of time frame, Erickson’s works are
distinguished by insightful commentary on the universal character of the
human spirit. Recently returned from a three-month, artist residency
at The Victoria and Albert Museum, Erickson will share her experience in working amongst 5000 years of clay traditions represented as documented in her
blog.
Her highly sought creations are in the collections of major museums in
America and England and documented in several volumes of the annual
journal Ceramics In America.
“Endeavoring to rediscover the techniques once used by these potters
during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries has spurred years of
experimentation. In the course of this technological investigation, I
also develop an awareness of the broader historical contexts surrounding
these potting traditions. My approach has always challenged
traditional explanations and conceptions about pre-industrial ceramics
and the methods used to create them. I have sought to find the original
language of the artifact itself to make a tangible connection to the
present. Physically recreating these lost processes reinforces the
irreplaceable significance of the hand even in the technological
landscape of the twenty-first century.”
