Tenure-track Faculty Position in Ceramics
Concordia
University’s Department of Studio Arts invites applications for one
tenure-track position in Ceramics for July 1, 2014.
Studio Arts
is the largest department in the Faculty of Fine Arts and enjoys a
longstanding reputation as one of Canada’s foremost environments for the
study and creation of visual art. BFA programs are offered in Ceramics,
Fibres and Material Practices, Intermedia/Cyberarts, Painting and
Drawing, Photography, Print Media, Sculpture and Studio Art. For more
than 30 years, Studio Arts has maintained an MFA program of
international stature. The department emphasizes the importance of
studio production and has an experienced technical staff and faculty of
more than 100 full-time and part-time professors, including some of the
most celebrated contemporary artists in the country.
Ceramics is a
growing program of study within Studio Arts. Linked to a rich and
diverse material culture history, it is the only university-level
program in Quebec and one of the few university-level Ceramics programs
in Canada. Concordia offers a rigorous and comprehensive study of the
creative, technical and conceptual aspects of ceramics as a contemporary
art form. Material based in nature, the Ceramics program supports
traditional and non-traditional practices and also encourages a
cross-disciplinary approach integrated with the most current
technologies and practices.
The successful candidate will
normally be expected to teach Ceramics courses at the graduate and
undergraduate levels, participate in the coordination and development of
the Ceramics curriculum, and perform required administrative duties in
order to further develop this program, the MFA program and the
department of Studio Arts, as necessary.
The ideal candidate
should have a strong critical/theoretical background and a contemporary
understanding of both extended and discipline-based approaches to
ceramics material practices. Preference will be given to candidates who
are clearly committed to ceramics as a medium and who demonstrate
technical expertise in two or more of the following areas:
hand-building, clay and glaze technology, mould-making processes, and
two or three-dimensional media.
Applicants should possess a
completed MFA degree, a strong exhibition record, college and/or
university teaching experience, demonstrated knowledge of ceramics
history and theory and a record of administrative experience and
committee service. Although classes are taught in English, fluency in
French is considered an asset.

effectiveness (including course syllabi, examples of student work,
assignments and evaluations); a research statement, documentation of
artwork (sent on DVD, CD, or USB memory stick); and the names and

required to provide an attestation of terminal degree.

to budgetary approval, we anticipate filling this position, normally at
the rank of Assistant Professor, for July 1, 2014. Appointments at a
more senior level may also be considered. Review of applications will
