I’m sure you’ve all heard by now ( i was away over the weekend so a bit behind on ceramic news) that Jasna Solokovic has been awarded the Winifred Shantz award. Check out the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery for all of the details. Congrats Jasna!
“Ms. Sokolovic uses clay not just to make objects but as a way for developing structures for drawing and painted images. Using images and text she presents thoughts on relationships. Images of two chairs, two birds, titles like “Waiting for You”, “With or With Out You,” show stories of life. There is an element of installation in how she uses the wall and floor and engages the viewer with alternative image sources to tell a story. Her work is an excellent example of contemporary art whose style fit perfectly well to the project she intents to undertake which includes one residency and two researches in Mexico.
“My work has been highly influenced by Mexican traditional art in my choice of colours and imagery, as well as in the way I use them to depict every day stories on ceramic works.” Jasna Sokolivic”

Currently on exhibition:
Beyond the Embargo
Cuban and American Ceramics
June 11, 2009– October 18, 2009
“Curated by Catherine Merrill, this exhibition highlights works in clay from a group of prominent Cuban and American artists who, in spite of the continued U.S. Embargo against Cuba, have continued to work and exhibit together in both Cuba and the United States. This collaborative cultural exchange brings together artists from different aesthetic, cultural and technical backgrounds.”
Also check out their upcoming exhibition:
Warren MacKenzie

He has studied the ceramics of many cultures, particularly Japan, whose forms, glazes and aesthetics can be seen in his work. MacKenzie’s lifelong dedication to utilitarian vessels reflects a worldview where art and life are one.
