SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Savannah College of Art and Design and the American Craft Council will host a symposium, “Making Meaning and the Marketplace: Craft and the next generation of thought” at the Coastal Georgia Center Friday, Nov. 6, 2-4 p.m. The symposium will explore how the next generation’s thinking influences craft’s place in the market and culture at one of the nation’s leading schools for craft media. This event is free and open to the public.
Titled, “Means of Production – Collaboration as a Multi-faceted Practice,” the dialogue will include a dynamic exploration of ecology, use of multiple disciplines and technology in craft practice, and the distinctions between manufacturing and the artisan workshop.
The symposia will be moderated by Fabio Fernandez, exhibitions director at the Society of Arts and Crafts, Boston. Other featured panelists include: Metalsmith Gabriel Craig, featured in American Craft Magazine for his interactive public performance taking his jewelry-making studio to the streets, Eric Pfeiffer of Pfeiffer Labs, and Olivia Robinson, assistant professor of Fiber/Material Studies and Syracuse University and interdisciplinary installation artist.
Students works will be on display at the opening reception Thursday, Nov. 5, 6-8 p.m. at Pepe Hall. The exhibition which is titled, “Currency of Craft,” is open to students in the whole school, not just School of Design. The students are competing to participate in the American Craft Council’s “School to Market” program February 23-28, 2010, in Baltimore, Maryland. This reception is free and open to the public.
Both reception and symposia are free and open to the public.

Alright folks, I’ve been thinking again lately that it’s time for another ARTIST OF THE DAY month here at musing. Last April was so much fun, so let’s give it another go. This time to sweeten the deal I’m going to be offering a giveaway as incentive to get you guys to send in your work. Here’s how it will go:
- Open to any reader of the blog. International submissions encouraged.
- All you need to do is send me some images of your work, a brief bio, a brief statement about your work (nothing serious, don’t stress about it!) and a link to your website/and/or email if you want people to be able to contact you. (let me know if you DON’T want your email included in the post)
- Include your mailing address (for my eyes only in case you win)
- Artists previously shown in the last Artist of the day month are still eligible, but you MUST send me new work.
Now I know what you’re saying – what about the giveaway Carole?????
There will be 2 prizes, so 2 ways to enter – but you can only win once.
#1 way to win – SUBMIT YOUR WORK!!! I’m going to randomly chose a day of the month out of a hat (after the month has passed) and the artist showcased on that day will be a winner.
#2 way to win – COMMENT,COMMENT,COMMENT!!! Give these artists of the day some love and adoration and you could be on your way to winning! At the end of the month I’ll randomly chose another number out of a hat for a day of the month, then I’ll randomly chose a number to correspond with the number of comments attached to the post. If your comment represents the chosen number you are a winner. If you are the comment winner I’ll notify you at the end of the month to get address info.
Sounds complicated? Naw, simple. All you have to do is send me your info and images ASAP to ensure you have a spot as an Artist of the month and then once the posts go live in December comment as much as you can.
Oh and as for the prizes??? Well it’ll be 2 ceramic items of equal value from the shelves of my studio, not sure what yet, but i promise it’ll be worth it!
It’s up to you guys to make December full of beautiful posts here on Musing, and my gift in return is a piece of my own artwork sent to you, wherever in the world you might live – free of charge.
