call for submissions: Creative Adventures in Clay: Ceramics by Uppercase

As I mentioned in a previous post, I’ve partnered with Janine Vangool of Uppercase and Julia Krueger to publish a book on Ceramics in 2020. We’ve been working away on the themes for the book and compiling a list of potential artists to include – but we also want to here from YOU!

Yes, YOU!

Part of this book is going to be curated via submissions that you send in to us. So here’s your chance to get your work seen internationally in one of Uppercase’s exquisite publications. They are eye candy and compelling content overload!

“You do not need to be a professional potter to apply. If you’re an entrepreneur who utilizes ceramics in your business in a unique way, please apply. We are looking for a variety of abilities, techniques and perspectives. Our preference through this audition process is to discover previously unpublished artists, makers and entrepreneurs. Thank you for your understanding.

This is an “audition” only. Your submission will be reviewed by publisher Janine Vangool and co-authors Carole Epp and Julia Krueger. Please do not contact us individually; we will review everything and will let you know in early 2020 on the status of your audition.

Should you be selected for inclusion in Volume C: Ceramics, we will have additional questions for you in January that will be due by the end of February 2020 along with high-resolution photographs. Thank you!”

Korean Onggi and Wheel Throwing Master Class in Icheon

“A fascination with large Onggi vessels and the rough simplicity of Korean slipware led Kwak Kyung-tae to develop his own voice in clay. He works exclusively in Onggi and Buncheong, taking his inspiration from the traditions of the Korean peninsula of his birth, particularly during the Joseon dynasty, and applying them in a modern context. His work is resonant of nature’s forms and structures through wheel-thrown and altered work, often including spontaneous marks and gestural brushwork on large pots. His works evoke a balance of the crude and the sublime power of nature’s imperfection, in large and small scale work. The austerity of his style is born from an honest, tacit relationship with clay developed and mastered over a lifetime. He has held solo and group exhibitions throughout East Asia and Europe. His pieces are sold in galleries and shops in Europe, Asia, and the USA.”

call for entry: Lip Service

LIP SERVICE
A cup is one of the most intimate objects that we interact with on a daily basis. When we sit with our tea, coffee or beverage of choice, we are in communion with this drinking vessel through its touch to our lips and its feel in our hands. Furthermore, when we drink with a handmade object, we are also connecting with the maker of the object, one pair of hands to another.  Selected through a jurying process by nationally renowned Massachusetts-based potter Mary Barringer, this exhibition will feature 100 drinking vessels by artists from across the country– cups, mugs, teabowls, yunomi, shot cups, martini cups, bourbon cups, wine goblets, espresso mugs, tumblers and more. We seek a diverse array of objects that invite use and handling, and are made for different hands, different aesthetics and different liquids. A feast for the eyes, each object is meant to be taken home and enjoyed one beverage at a time.

JUROR
Mary Barringer received a BA in art from Bennington College and has been a studio artist since 1973, making both sculpture and functional pottery. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and she has taught widely at universities, art schools, and craft centers and including Ohio University, Hartford Art School, and Anderson Ranch. In addition to her studio work she has written and lectured on the history of ceramics, and from 2004 until 2014 she served as editor of The Studio Potter journal. She lives in western Massachusetts.
