Dates of Residency: August 15, 2015 through August 15, 2016 (one year minimum, with the possibility of one year renewal)

This self-directed residency is designed to provide a ceramic artist
with university based studio access, as they make the transition from or
between academic settings. Furthermore, the program is intended to
allow a resident the time and space to pursue a body of work in a
creative and energetic environment, while enhancing the art program at
Midwestern State University. The accepted artist will participate within
the ceramics area as an informal collaborator and mentor for students,
while working in the common studio space. To see images of the ceramics

Midwestern will provide:
• All materials and firing
• A small office with internet access and storage space
• Studio space in the common 4000 square foot studio area
• 24-hour/7 days per week access
• Most university privileges as given to full time faculty (access to
the workout facility, reserved parking ($50), library access, etc.)
• A small-furnished apartment located at a private residence three
miles from MSU with utilities paid including Wi-Fi (details to be
discussed during the interview process).
• A minimum stipend of $6000 per year
• The possibility of teaching one Ceramics for Non-Majors course per
semester as an adjunct professor, at $2,500 per course (if the course
enrolls 10 students)
• The possibility of a solo exhibition (details to be discussed during the interview process)
The Resident Artist:
• Will be responsible for 10 hours per week of studio management and
maintenance (including but not limited to the following: loading and
unloading kilns, clay inventory, mixing clay, mixing glaze and firing
kilns, and facilitating the making of bowls for the Wichita Falls Empty
Bowls event . . . The studio made over 1,000 bowls and raised $86,000 in
2015)
• Will teach one continuing education wheel-throwing course per semester
• Will teach one ceramics for non-majors class per semester if the
course makes enrollment of 10 students (It has made enrollment for the
fall semester of 2015)
• Will attend opening receptions and special events
• Will be responsible for all non-ceramic related expenses aside from accommodation
• Will help set up and work the Mother’s Day Ceramic Sale
• Will help fire the wood kiln once per semester
• Will give one public lecture on her/his work
• Will donate one piece for the permanent collection of MSU
Equipment available to Resident:
• Three large electric kilns
• Large Brent slab roller
• Two extruders
• Three pugmills
• Soldner mixer
• Separate well equipped glaze room
• Spray booth
• Materials and clay mixing/storage room
• 18 electric wheels
• One wheelchair accessible wheel
• Ball mill
5,000 square foot covered kiln yard with the following:
• Two 40 cubic foot computer-controlled Geil car kilns
• A 30 cubic foot “fast fire” wood kiln
• Two older updraft kilns
• A 30 cubic foot downdraft soda kiln
• A 3 cubic foot updraft test kiln
Access, by permission, to the following studios:
• Painting
• Sculpture
• Metals
• Printmaking
• 24 station Adobe Suite equipped Mac lab with large format printers
Requirements: An MFA in ceramics is required as there is a
probability/possibility for teaching a university level core course. All
applicant reviews will be based on portfolio review and individual
merit.
