Required Qualifications and Education:
Candidates for
the position must have a record of: distinguished professional
achievement as a studio artist, demonstration of effective mentorship of
students, and a record of outstanding teaching performance and
effectiveness with students beyond the high school level. A terminal
degree in studio art or substantial experience in at least one of these
studio areas is required: ceramics, drawing, metals/jewelry, painting,
printmaking, sculpture, and new media.
Responsibilities – Essential Functions:
Full-time,
two semester position. Position will include: teaching assignment
equivalent to one course per semester, participation in group and
individual critiques, and mentoring for a broad range of students.
Position is expected to maintain a high level of creative activity and
professional visibility.

Projects that involve the local community as well as the student population are encouraged but not required.

The
Department of Craft/Material Studies is one of 15 departments, within
the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. The
department specializes in five media areas: Clay, Metal, Wood, Glass
and Fiber. We offer both breadth and depth across the media areas and
have one of the few departments in the nation to offer all five craft
disciplines at the BFA and MFA levels. U.S News & World Report

students at the undergraduate and graduate levels and 15 nationally
recognized programs in design, visual and performing arts. U.S. News

Description:
We are
seeking a dynamic teacher, creative colleague, broad thinker, and
technically skilled artist who is dedicated to the innovation and
investigation of Ceramics in a contemporary art context with teaching
specialties ranging from vessels to designed objects and installations.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished, versatile artist with
expertise in contemporary approaches, concepts, techniques, and
critical issues as they pertain to ceramics and art in general. Areas of
expertise might include: sculpture, utility and function, craft and
objects, vessel making, 3D digital fabrication/rapid prototyping,
traditional processes and/or emerging material processes with an
interest in digital technology. The successful candidate will be able to
engage in future curricular and facilities planning as an aspect of the
ongoing conversation about the evolution and future of the discipline.
The successful candidate will teach 5-6 courses per year including
instruction of graduate students across all five disciplines; serve on
Department, School, and /or University committees; advise students;
maintain and build an active exhibition record; manage and facilitate
the ordering of supplies for the Ceramic studios, and work
collaboratively with members of the department and School of Arts to
foster a progressive atmosphere for exploring the arts. The ability to
communicate with students on multiple levels, and from multiple media
areas, and eagerness to teach and develop both graduate and
undergraduate programs is essential. The faculty member will be required
to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for
external funding, as appropriate, and potential for scholarship or
creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the
department. The faculty member must have demonstrated experience working
in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or
commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU. This is a full-time
9-month position.
Requirements:
• M. F. A. or equivalent in Ceramics or related area.
• Successful college level teaching preferred.
• Familiarity with contemporary art history and art/craft theory.
• Ability to teach beginning and advanced students in contemporary art practices in Ceramics.
• Proficiency in teaching a wide range of aesthetic, conceptual, and technical aspects within Ceramics.
• Evidence of national/international career profile and active exhibition record.
• The

“Penland School of Crafts is a national center for craft education located
in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Penland’s focus on excellence,
its long history, and its inspiring, retreat setting have made it
a model of experiential education. The school offers workshops in
books and paper, clay, drawing and painting, glass, iron, metals,
photography, printmaking and letterpress, textiles, wood, and other media. Penland
sponsors artist residencies, a gallery and visitors center, and
community education programs.
Each year approximately 1200 people come to Penland
for instruction and another 14,000 pass through as visitors. Penland
has no standing faculty; its instructors include full-time studio
artists as well as teachers from colleges and universities. Students
live at Penland and take only one class at a time allowing them
to learn by total immersion–the ideas and information gained in
a two-week session might take a year to absorb and process.
The school has also become the focal point for a lively community of
craft artists, thanks in part to the resident program which has
encouraged many artists to settle in the area. The student experience
is greatly enhanced by the presence of so many nearby studios.
Students come from all walks of life. They range from 19 to 90 years of age
and from absolute beginners to professional craftspeople. Some see
Penland as a productive retreat, some as a source of inspiration
for their personal creative lives, and others as a place to exchange
vital information about material, technique, and process. What brings
them all together is a love of materials and making, and the often
transformative experience of working with intensity and focus in
a supportive community atmosphere.
Penland School began out of a strong belief in a few simple values. Penland’s founder, Lucy Morgan
summarized these as “the joy of creative occupation and a certain
togetherness-working with one another in creating the good and the
beautiful.” For more than seventy-five years, these principles have

Long Term Residency Application Deadline: February 1st, 2014
The Long-Term Residency (September 1 – July 31) is ideal for committed individuals in transition from post baccalaureate studies to graduate school, as well as those pursuing the development of professional artistic careers. Self-directed ceramic artists searching for the time, space and resources needed to explore new ideas and create new work will enjoy the rural mountainous setting. Accepted residents will be provided with studio space, housing, utilities, and a monthly stipend in exchange for twenty hours of work per week at the Clay Center. Responsibilities will include assisting in the retail operation of the gallery, teaching community clay classes, as well as cleaning and maintenance of the studio and gallery. Residents will be responsible for personal living expenses, as well as all material and firing expenses. The application deadline is February 1st annually.

The Red Lodge Clay Center welcomes applications from ceramic artists who will thrive working as a team, in a community minded atmosphere.
The ceramics studio is located approximately six miles north of Red Lodge, 463 Two Mile Bridge Road. A form of transportation is necessary for the duration of the residency.
