1000 Miles Apart – 2011 Ceramics Conference

The Ceramics Area at the School of Art, University of Manitoba will host 1000 Miles Apart from September 29 to October 1, 2011. 1000 Miles Apart will feature a number of high caliber artists who will present lectures and demonstrations, and provide a forum for exchange between students, faculty, and professionals in the field.
John Balistreri, professor at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, will share his latest research on using clay as a printing material in the rapid prototyping of three-dimensional forms. Virginia Scotchie, world renowned for her energetic and stimulating ceramic workshops, will join us from the University of South Carolina. Paul Mathieu, professor of ceramics at Emily Carr University in Vancouver, will present a lecture on his recent art and industry experiences in China, and provide a critical view of the state of ceramics in the 21st century. Rory MacDonald, professor of ceramics at NSCAD University in Halifax, will present the closing address at 1000 Miles Apart, a lecture that is free and open to the public as well as conference participants.
1000 Miles Apart will include an exhibition at Gallery One One One in the FitzGerald Building. The exhibition will include work by ceramics students, faculty, and the visiting artists. Concurrent with the conference, visitors may investigate site specific installations by artist Rory MacDonald on the University of Manitoba campus and beyond.
Concurrently with the conference, Winnipeg Art Gallery is hosting a lecture on September 29 at 7:00 p.m. by Greg Payce who is participating in the exhibition Precise: Craft Refined. This event is open to the public and admission will be charged.

registration fee is $50.00, payable by cash or cheque to the University of Manitoba.

Workshop 1: Thrown, Altered, & Assembled

In this workshop, John Britt will present how he throws, alters, and assembles porcelain and stoneware into a variety of shapes–everything from jars to vases. He will discuss and demonstrate how he approaches the wheel as a forming tool. His demonstration will include closed forms and applications as well as a multitude of variations from tight forms to loose tea bowls. It will be an action-packed day designed for beginning to intermediate potters.

Workshop 2: Understanding Glazes

John Britt will give a general overview of ceramic glazes and glaze materials in this workshop. He will also discuss different firing methods and will cover cones, kilns, firing dynamics, and properties of various ceramic materials. The atmosphere will be fun and relaxed, with plenty of time for questions and answers and will include some more structured lecture periods as well. The content of the discussion will be directed by the participants’ interest. This class is appropriate for students of all levels.

The NICHE Awards competition is open to professional craft artists over the age of 21 who reside in America or Canada and are actively involved in the design and production of craftwork supplied to galleries and/or craft stores. The NICHE Student Awards competition is open to any craft student residing in and attending an American or Canadian undergraduate, graduate or certificate arts program. Submitted work must have been produced or introduced after August 31, 2010 to be eligible. Work previously submitted to the competition will not be accepted. Artists may enter as a student for up to one (1) year after graduation; however, work submitted must have been produced while an artist was still a student. Professionals may only submit work produced within the U.S. or Canada. Work produced in secondary studios within other countries may not be submitted. NICHE magazine reserves the right to merge categories that do not accrue an appropriate number of applications. The only way to enter the 2012 NICHE Awards or 2012 NICHE Student Awards is by completing an application online. Paper applications will not be accepted. One application per artist is allowed. Each application allows for up to three pieces of work to be submitted; no more than two pieces may be submitted in the same category. The competition is judged on a per piece basis, not on an application basis. It is therefore possible to be up to a three-time winner. Artists may enter in either the professional division or student division, not in both. Entries must be submitted by the artist in the artist’s name, not in the name of a company or school. No additional images showing detail will be accepted for jurying. The image photo submitted may be enlarged by the judges to see detail. Each image must be a separate piece of work and show the work in its entirety. Applicants may not enter an individual piece in more than one category. Installation art will not be accepted in any category. The cost to enter is $40 for professional, $20 for current Buyers Market exhibitors and $18 for students. A.I.R. Vallauris: Artists in Residence, Vallauris France www.air-vallauris.org Located in the heart of the old town of Vallauris, on the French Riviera, the association A.I.R. Vallauris (Artists in Residence) welcomes international artists from all horizons to meet and collaborate with local artists and to research and create new work in an artistic laboratory created specifically for them. The Association has four primary objectives:
To host resident international artists
To support contemporary creation
to provide eduation in the field of Ceramic Arts
to organize cultural events Created in October 2001, the Association A.I.R. Vallauris, since April 2002, welcomes several artists at a given time in its residence and studios available to the artists. There are several different residency periods to choose from, and the durations vary. The creators using different mediums benefit from an equipped studio, independent furnished bedrooms and a gallery where their works are presented at the end of the residency period. The quality of the artistic creation is one of the major concerns or the program; the selection committee evaluates applicants based on their artistic experience, merit and project proposal. Since April 2002, over 130 creators of 30 different nationalities have taken part in the program. The Association encourages and facilitates interaction between local artists and international artists. Workshops, conferences, demonstrations exhibitions are organized with the resident artists. These events are open to the public. Through partnerships with the local School of Fine Arts, the local government, and international organizations a sensibility of exchange between the public, artists, and international is realized. APPLICATIONS FOR RESIDENCE ————————– Applications for residencies are accepted throughout the year with deadlines being the first day of each month. Applications are reviewed, scheduled and confirmed during the first week of each month.
