The School for American Crafts is seeking individuals who are committed to contributing to RIT’s core values, honor code, and statement of diversity. Primary responsibility will be to teach courses in the BFA and MFA Ceramics Degree Program. Full-time faculty teach courses during three quarters (fall, winter, spring ); provide service to the School for American Crafts, RIT and the community; and engage in scholarship/creative activity in the Ceramics field.
Other responsibilities include supervision and management of studio facilities, advising students, and implementing curriculum.
The Ceramics department offers students comprehensive instruction from the faculty. We educate students towards aesthetic self-reliance and technical proficiency. Our goal is for students to realize their own potential and become leading professionals in the Ceramics Field. The Ceramics studio supports a wide range of personal investigations relevant to contemporary crafts. We provide and encourage an active dialogue between current issues in art and art history. Intellectual discourse, aesthetics and craftsmanship are emphasized and thrive harmoniously.
Rochester, located in Monroe County, is the 79th largest city in the United States and the third largest city in New York State. Five additional counties are included in the Greater Rochester Region: Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans and Wayne. A little more than one million people inhabit the Greater Rochester region.
QUALIFICATIONS:REQUIRED: Applicant must hold a MFA degree in Ceramics. Have an extensive exhibition record with a portfolio that indicates a signature body of work. Provide evidence of strong teaching skills. Candidates must possess technical mastery in most all ceramic materials and processes, such as throwing, hand building, slip casting, clay and glaze chemistry, and kiln building and firing. Be able to teach utilitarian and sculptural Ceramics with a broadminded acceptance of a wide spectrum of interests and approaches in the field.
PREFERRED: A thorough knowledge of all aspects of contemporary and historical Ceramics Art History within the larger context of Art History and the broader field of Contemporary Art.
