The School of the Art Institute of Chicago seeks an exceptional artist for a full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Ceramics, beginning Fall 2010. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience, teaching, and current professional status. The Ceramics Department is one of twenty departments at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The department is administered by a full-time faculty member as chair, and offers 25 undergraduate courses each academic year as part of the School’s comprehensive BFA program. Ceramics has 10 graduate students with studios in the department who work with faculty through Graduate Projects—individual tutorial sessions. There are currently two full-time senior faculty, a full-time visiting artist, and six part-time faculty. Qualifications: The successful candidate will be an accomplished, versatile artist with relevant teaching experience, and expertise in contemporary approaches, concepts, techniques, and critical issues as they pertain to ceramics and art in general. In a department dedicated to the innovation and investigation of ceramics in a contemporary art context, with teaching specialties ranging from vessels to designed objects and installations, we seek artists that embrace the contradictions of the medium to complement the current faculty’s wide range of traditional and new genre specializations. Areas of expertise might include: sculpture, architecture, ornamentation, utility and function, craft and objects, painting and ceramics, vessel making, 3-D digital fabrication/rapid prototyping, practical design/build techniques, traditional processes and/or emerging material processes, interest in digital technology, ceramics history and theory. Demonstrable skills and techniques will be thoroughly integrated into the conceptual frameworks of professional practice. Responsibilities: The ideal candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate level ceramic classes and mentor students within the context of an interdisciplinary art and design school, maintain an active professional practice, and participate in the development of the department and in faculty governance of the School. The ability to communicate with students on multiple levels, and eagerness to teach and develop both graduate and undergraduate programs is essential. Candidates will be interested and able to engage in future curricular and facilities planning as an aspect of the ongoing conversation about the evolution and future of the discipline. Applicants from diverse backgrounds are strongly urged to apply. Application procedure: By Monday January 11, 2010 please send a letter of application; curriculum vitae; statement of philosophy regarding both teaching and professional practice; sample syllabus/i; portfolio of professional work on CD-Rom, DVD, 35 mm slides, and/or website as appropriate; contact information for three references; and a stamped, self-addressed postcard to confirm receipt of materials to: Ceramic Search
